With Rootstock 2018 just around the corner, it’s that time of the year to reach out to the artists, chefs, stylists – anyone –  that make Burgundy’s only three-day food, music and wine festival extra special. First up, is returning Rootstock artist Noée, AKA Parisian musician, Melanie Di Pietrantonio. For those that attended Rootstock 2017, they will know that the Nouvelle Star chanteuse received the loudest applause of the weekend, with many of her fans attending her performance from all over the nation.
This year, we’re delighted to welcome Noée home among the vines of Clos Marey-Monge, a place that is very special to the singer-songwriter. In the 12 months since we interviewed the multi-talented musician, much has happened to Noée, so we called her up and asked her all about it…

“The last few months have been incredible…”

Q. Noée, bonjour! You’ve had a very successful 2018 so far. We can’t wait to hear all about it…

“Yes, it’s been a very strange but super exciting year so far. I’ve only just returned from Lisbon, where I’ve been singing backing vocals for Madame Monsieur, the French contestant for this year’s Eurovision Song Contestant. They came 13th in the Grand Final with the song ‘Mercy’. The last few months have been an incredible and unforgettable experience. It was so strange to be there at the Eurovision final with the band and their team! It all went so fast, I can’t believe it’s all over already.

Q. Do you have plans now that the Eurovision Song Contest is complete. What’s your focus for the rest of the year?

“Well, today, actually, I started work writing and composing new music. Because of the last few months with Eurovision, it has been  a couple months since I last sat down and wrote a song, even though I have much inspiration and lots of ideas floating around in my mind. It is good now to finally sit down and write them down! After Eurovision, I decided to take a small break because I wanted the time to be sure about what I wanted to do, the songs I wanted to write, and to become close to my feelings again. I have to be in the right mood to write music, and sometimes that requires taking time away from all the distractions.”

Q. Will you be releasing any new music of your own this year?

“I’m not sure I’ll be releasing music this year, but never say never. Right now, it depends on how I work… and who I work with! But we shall see. If I do, I’ll let you know first!”

Q. So, it’s been almost twelve months since you performed at Rootstock 2017. Remind us – what makes for an awesome Noée show?

“My boys! Elias [guitarist] & David [bassist]. We’ve been performing together for many years now and we know each other so well, that when we play music together, everything just connects, so it all feels very comfortable and natural. Playing together with Elias and David is the most important thing for me when I perform. Knowing they are there with me, makes the music sound sweeter. Our friendship is the key to a great performance! We have a very special chemistry which I am very proud of.”

“I fell in love with Rootstock…”

Q. You’re performing on the Discovery Stage this year. Any secrets or surprises you can tell us about y0ur show?

“Well, I can tell you that I’ll be performing many new songs for the first time at the festival. It may be much of a surprise, but it will be fun to play them to a crowd. The performance may have surprises in them – I might forget the lyrics! Rootstock 2018 is the only show I’m performing this year, with theses songs. So, if you want to hear them, you better come to Pommard!

Last year, I fell in love with the festival, the team, and Burgundy so it will be a real thrill to play new songs for the first time in a place that I adore. When we performed in 2017, there were four of us on stage. For this year I decided we would only be three, an acoustic version of us, because that’s what I am.. a simple girl, doing simple music I love. Doing an intimate acoustic set is the best way to be close to the crowd.”

Rootstock 2017: Noée’s performance last year drew a huge crowd and large applause.

Q. Has there been a particular piece of music, or band, or life event, that has inspired your songwriting in the past 12 months?

“I believe that everything inspires me. Life inspires me! My family inspires me. All the good and bad surprises that life brings to you – they all influence you, especially when you write a song, or do something creative.  There has been some difficult moments in the past four months, days that have challenged me. But being able to write about those experiences in music allows you to free yourself from them…sometimes.  When I write I have to be true and honest about things and what I’ve been living. I can’t lie…but I think that makes a song so much more interesting.”

Q. What did you enjoy most about Rootstock 2017 and what are you looking forward to the most for this year’s event?

“Everything! I fell In love with Pommard, with the château, with the wine, and just being surrounded by all these amazing artists for a whole weekend. My favorite memory from last year is Flo Malley and I singing a duet in the vineyard, being scared of the rain, and laughing. So much fun!  The Rootstock team is amazing, the stage, in the sunshine, was intense but incredible. Everyone who was there really shared something unforgettable. And I’m very happy to be able to say that I was here for the first edition! And the second! That makes me proud.”
