Singer. Songwriter. Guitarist. Record label founder. Parisian musician Théo Maxyme is a polymath, a jack of all trades, and – as time will tell – a master of all. It’s no surprise then that Théo is a busy man. But, thanks to his partnership with Rootstock festival ever since its inception in 2017, Théo and the festival organisers at Château de Pommard have remained close collaborators ever since. “I’m literally underwater these days, I’m so busy!” says Théo, buzzing busily. “There is so much happening at once, but I’m happy to talk to you.” Let’s not waste another second…
Q. Théo – how are you, sir? What are you up to at the moment?
“I’m always up to something! Especially this year. Thanks to the Rootstock team and the team at Château de Pommard, I’ve recorded my first EP at the legendary Ferber Studios in Paris – where Gainbourg, Lenny Kravitz, Archive and Alain Bashung have all recorded – in November. With my band, we managed to record six songs live in a single day, and the whole recording was filmed by our friends at Phosphene Productions. The whole thing was mastered by Chab, who has mastered records by Air and Daft Punk. It was a wonderful and exciting, if challenging, experience that none of us will ever forget.”
“The song went to No.2 on iTunes Rock on the day of its release!”
Q. You’ve released your first single – congratulations. What’s next?
“I released my first single “Sur le Fil” on March 23, 2018, with a live session video from Ferber Studios. The song went to No.2 on iTunes Rock on the day of its release! This was crazy and we couldn’t believe it at first! We’ll be releasing our second single on June 15 just before the summer to keep the rhythm going. The final EP, with two more live sessions, will be released in October. I’m really happy with the sound of this first project, and we’re already looking forward to producing and releasing our debut album in 2019.”
“Rootstock Records is an upcoming label like none other…”
Q. Can you talk to us about Rootstock Records and your role as Artistic Director this year at Rootstock 2018…
“Rootstock Records is an upcoming label like none other. Based at Château de Pommard, the artists of Rootstock Records will benefit from a studio at the Château to rock their music, as well as promotion and distribution services. Most importantly, they will be developed by a passionate team who will look after the artist from day one. I am really glad to be part of this team as Artistic director. After two years leading my own label, Active Records, and through my experience as Channel Manager at Believe Digital, I’ll bring my own expertise to the artists’ careers from an artistic and strategic point of view. The ambition of Rootstock Records is to assist the artist both on the overall direction of their project, as well as the precise musical and visual elements of the project. With the Pommard and Rootstock teams as producers, and other partners supporting the whole process, I expect only good stuff to emerge out of this exciting adventure.”
“Lots of surprises…but I’m not going to spoil anything now. Just be there.”
Q. What music, band, or life event, has inspired your songwriting in the past 12 months?
“The big thing that has inspired me this year was the decision to sing only in French. It was an obvious choice from the start but you know, you often miss what’s just in front of you. I raised myself with international rock legends such as David Bowie, the Beatles, U2, Dire Straits, the Police… yet I’ve always been fond of French literature and poetry. After years of playing and learning music, I finally found out how to mix the two in order not to be a pale copy of my influences, nor to give away the energy I’ve always loved in rock music. Most importantly, I need both the text and the passion. The decision to sing and write in French was the key to my inspiration over the last few months and it’s really paid off.
Q. What’s been playing on your stereo lately – any music you could recommend?
“U2’s latest album, Songs of Experience, is a gem. An ode to maturity and growing old. And due to my decision of singing only in my mother tongue, I’ve been crazy about Benjamin Biolay, Alain Souchon and Dominique A for the last months. Even some of Calogero’s best written songs. If you haven’t heard of them, go check them out!”
“Rootstock festival was a whole lot of fun, and we loved every moment of it…”
Q. Last Question. What did you love about last year’s Rootstock? You played twice, after all…during a late-night storm!
“Ah, yes, the festival was so much fun! The band were so glad to close the first day by playing some rock ‘n’ roll underneath the storm. Well, Rootstock festival was a whole lot of fun, and we loved every moment of it. The welcome, the stage, the people, the wine, obviously, the other artists, the after party, the team… you just can’t take anything away from this crazy experience which was also our first festival. That said, I don’t think we’ll ever forget Rootstock 2018 either…it’s looking like it could be one to remember!”
